【POINT】

ここでは、be動詞が補語(補って説明する語)に名詞を導いた表現をあげている。
基本的には、「〜は〜ナニだ」といった意味となるが、(1)のように「私のお客さんであれ」が「どうぞご遠慮なく」と訳す場合がある。

<<be動詞+(a,an)+形容詞+名詞>>のパターン

 She is a rather good-looking girl.
彼女はかなり器量よしの娘だ
* ratherは「かなり」の意味、副詞。

 He is a nice guy at heart.
彼は根はいいやつだ
* at heartは、「心では」「根は」の意味。

 She is not my type.
彼女は私の好みではない

(5)
 She is only a child.
彼女は子どもに過ぎない

(6)
 He's quite a fellow.
彼はなかなかのやつだ
* quiteは、「並はずれた、たいした」の意味。quite a 〜と語順に注意。

 She is a very forward young lady.
彼女はとてもずうずうしい若い女性だ
* forwardは、元々「前方」を表す方位語。「前方にいる」から「ずうずうしい」という意味に。

何てだらしないなりをしているんだ
*感嘆文。You are a mess.「あなたは、ふしだらな人だ」messは「混乱」の意味。

* maleの反意語はfemale「女性」。

* VIPのこと。a very important person

* the mostの後に、person,woman,girlなどが省略されている。最上級。

* He and Iはamではなく、areで受ける。

彼は悪いやつだ
* sortは口語で、「〜の人、もの」の意味。He is a good sort.「彼はいいやつだ」

* in one's day　「若い頃」の意味。

* suchは、「あれほど[これほど]の、あんな[そんな]に、このように、非常に、とても」の意味。語順はsuch a 〜となる。

 Is he anybody?
彼は名のある人か?
* anybodyは、「多少重きを置かれる人、ひとかどの人間」の意味。
