【POINT】

seem+(to be)+形容詞(補語)/名詞(補語)の動詞フレーズ。
seemの基本的な意味は、「〜のようだ、〜と推測する」というとで、「形容詞や名詞が表すある状態のようだ」といった表現となる。
ただし、makeと同様、名詞も補語となることに注意してください。
ここでも、get,make,keep, goと同様、意味は異なるがbe動詞で表現できる。

This suit is rather tight. このスーツはややきつい
This suit seems rather tight. このスーツはややきついようだ

He is a nice person. 彼は素敵な人です
He seems (to be)a nice person 彼は素敵な人のようです

文例にはないが、IやWeが主語となる場合もある。

I am a nice person 私は素敵な人です
I seem (to be)a nice person. 私は素敵な人のように思われています

どうぞあなたの一番いいと思うようにしなさい
* このasは接続詞で、「〜が〜であるように」の意味です。
Cf. Please do as you like.　「どうか好きなようにしなさい」

● I may have+ed形動詞フレーズ　「(今考えてみると)私は〜したかもしれない」

* ratherは副詞で、「幾分、少々、やや」の意味です。

* to beは省略されることもある。
Cf. She is taller than Tom of the two.　二人の内、彼女はトムより背が高い

一見したところでは彼女は気むずかしそうだ
* at first glance　「一見したところ」
Cf. She is hard to please. 「彼女は、気むずかしい」

もう残っていないようだ(量)
* このmoreは、「量」を表すmuchの比較級、主語として単数扱い。
Cf. There is not any more.　「もう残っていません」

もう１つも残っていないようだ(数)
Cf. There are not any more.　「もう残っていません」

以下は、名詞が補語となっている。

Cf. He is a nice person.　「彼は素敵な人です」
　They are nice peoples.　「彼らは素敵な人たちです」personsは用いないのが普通。

彼は写真家のようだ
* to beを省略することもある。

 She doesn't seem a good teacher.
彼女はいい先生のようではない
Cf. She isn't a good teacher. 「彼女はいい先生ではありません」

 There seems no hope at all.
まったく望みがないように思える
Cf. There i no hope at all.　「まったく望みはありません」

 The man over there seems to be Mr. Yoshida.
あそこにいる男は、吉田君のようだ
* the man over there　「あそこにいる男」 cf. the man here 「ここにいる男」
