(1)　現れる[出現する]
　　　Stars began to appear in the sky.

(2)　(会合・新聞などに)出る、出演する、出場する
　　　He appeared on television last night.
　　　彼は昨晩、テレビに出演した
(3)　公になる、出版される
　　　His new book will appear next month.
　　　彼の新しい本は来月出版されます
(4)　(外見が)〜らしく見える、〜らしい
　　　She appears rich.
　　　彼女は金持ちらしい
(5)　[itを主語として]〜のようだ、〜らしい
　　　It appears that the storm has calmed down.
　　　嵐はやんだようだ

A young boy and girl appeared.
若い少年や少女が現れた、出てきた

He's rich, or (at least) he appears to be (rich).
彼は金持ちだ, いや, (少なくとも)そう見える

It appeared that the old man was quite well.
老人はまったく元気に見えました
